Air Vice Marshal ASM Fakhrul Islam, OSP, GUP, ndc, afwc, psc, GD (P) Vice-Chancellor, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Aviation and Aerospace University
A fighter pilot by profession, Air Vice Marshal Fakhrul has been associated with the military aviation and aerospace sector for more than three decades. He has shouldered progressively broader responsibilities within the military with a proven record of team building, enhancing new capabilities and cohesion, and encouraging innovations while leading large formations.
Air Vice Marshal Fakhrul has commanded Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) bases, wings, squadrons and also BAF contingents deployed in the United Nations peacekeeping mission. He has served as the Commandant of BAF Academy – a centre of excellence to train and develop future leaders. He was also the Air Officer Commanding BAF Base Zahurul Haque. His rewarding experience in staff assignments includes serving as Director of Air Operations, Director of Welfare & Ceremony, Director of Admin Coord and Provost Marshal of BAF. Before joining the University, he was the Commandant of Bangabandhu Aeronautical Centre, the largest military establishment in the country for aviation and aerospace-related designs, modernization, integration, and assembling of aircraft and avionics systems.
The Vice-Chancellor is familiar with the higher education landscape. As the Commandant of BAF Academy, he oversaw the academic activities of the officer cadets. His service as the Director-General (Training) at the Prime Minister's Office, Armed Forces Division entailed overseeing the planning and regulatory aspects of joint service training and higher education of the Armed Forces personnel. He is a Qualified Flying Instructor (QFI) and has trained a good number of officers to become world-class aviators. He has logged more than 3000 flying hours in various types of fixed-wing aircraft.
He graduated from several premier institutes at home and abroad including: Defence Services Command & Staff College, Armed Forces War College in Bangladesh, National Defence College in India and Air Force Command College in China. He holds a Master in Defence Studies from National University and a Master in Security Studies from National Defence College, Bangladesh. He also holds an MPhil degree from National Defence College, India. With his altruism, team-building skills and scholastic acumen, Air Vice Marshal Fakhrul is poised to take BSMRAAU to new heights.
In his personal life, Air Vice Marshal Fakhrul is a loving husband and a caring father of a son and a daughter.
